FIRST- “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”
“To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated, and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders.”
~ Dean Kamen,
Since 1989, the FIRST organization has succeeded in inspiring children and teens (ages 6-18) from around the world in pursuing different careers that involve science, technology, engineering, and math. By offering unique opportunities to explore these fields, and by opening the door to unseen career choices through the involvement in games and competition, FIRST encourages kids to utilize critical thinking and problem solving in their work. Students learn new skills, gain hands-on experience from the
challenges of being part of a team and using technology to complete certain tasks. Although winning is certainly a well-desired factor in taking part in these competitions, FIRST stresses appreciating the value of teamwork, and promotes what is called gracious professionalism and coopertition. These are key ethos of the program that encourage students to respect one another, one’s opponents, and one’s community on the path towards achieving a common goal. Learning to be compatible and respectful towards others is perhaps one of the most valuable skills that students can learn, and one that they will carry with them for the rest of their life.
FIRST is comprised of four different robotics programs, each pertaining to a specific
age/grade level. For more details, please contact us or visit the official FIRST website at http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms .
