This fall, Highland Robotics has been mentoring 4th and 5th graders with the Lego Mindstorms NXT and prepping them for Robofest. Robofest is a competition where 5th to 8th graders compete using the NXTs. We have been traveling to the 3 elementary schools in our district (Hinckley, Granger, and Sharon) for after school clinics.
The kids we mentored were ready to learn the NXT basics. We taught them to build and program a simple robot to navigate mazes. The clinics end with a great competition, summing up all the tasks they learned. Our students had a great time putting on these clinics, and the younger students loved it too. The older students even learned a thing or two!
On “Black Friday”, the 25th of November 2011, the Highland Robotics Team was up early to sell refreshments to the customers of JCPenneys. The sale kicked off at three am, which was cold and dark for the students and parents on that shift. During the day, though the weather was on our side – it was a sunny day and at least fifty degrees! We sold power drinks, candy, hot chocolate, pop, and coffee. Over all it was a successful fundraiser. This money will help us buy new equipment and parts. Thanks to the Boosters, volunteers, shoppers, and JCPenneys!
