Our Robot on 2-10-12

This is our robot as of 2-10-2012. We have 10 more days to work on it before the ship date for our first regional match.

Currently, we have a working pneumatic shooter, and have almost mastered shooting at the highest hoop. The collector hardware is mounted, but we are still working on the belt system. We are able to drive over “The Bump”, but we need to make some adjustments to the location of the arm when we are traveling over it.

We’ve made a lot of progress in the last week and currently we can Drive, Shoot, and go over “The Bump”. We’re happy with that, but will need a lot of refinement over the next 10 days!

At the kickoff Saturday January 7th 2012 we identified three challenges:

Shooting
Collecting balls
The ability to drive over the 4 in tall and 6 in wide “bump” between the bridges on the field

We have been working on these challenges for the past two weeks and have come a long way.

For our shooter we are using pneumatics to launch the ball into the hoop

For the collector, we are using belts (No pic yet)

We put an eight wheel drive system to help with the “bump”

Lego NXT camps

This fall, Highland Robotics has been mentoring 4th and 5th graders with the Lego Mindstorms NXT and prepping them for Robofest. Robofest is a competition where 5th to 8th graders compete using the NXTs. We have been traveling to the 3 elementary schools in our district (Hinckley, Granger, and Sharon) for after school clinics.

The kids we mentored were ready to learn the NXT basics. We taught them to build and program a simple robot to navigate mazes. The clinics end with a great competition, summing up all the tasks they learned. Our students had a great time putting on these clinics, and the younger students loved it too. The older students even learned a thing or two!

Black Friday Fundraiser 2011

On “Black Friday”, the 25th of November 2011, the Highland Robotics Team was up early to sell refreshments to the customers of JCPenneys. The sale kicked off at three am, which was cold and dark for the students and parents on that shift. During the day, though the weather was on our side – it was a sunny day and at least fifty degrees! We sold power drinks, candy, hot chocolate, pop, and coffee. Over all it was a successful fundraiser. This money will help us buy new equipment and parts. Thanks to the Boosters, volunteers, shoppers, and JCPenneys!
